Some 40% of the international retailers polled for the survey see emerging markets as their main source of growth in turnover over the next five years. Most international retailers are based in Europe, said Jonathan Riches, associate director of research and consulting at CBRE. 'Once they are operating a pan-European business, they face the choice of expansion in Asia or the Americas. Asia is preferred by most, as it is usually closer to the point of manufacture and is also seen to be a less competitive retail environment.'
