Portuguese shopping centre developer Sonae Sierra has won the Sustainable Energy Europe Award (SEE), a European Commission initiative that acknowledges the most innovative companies in the area of energy sustainability in Europe.
The award - in the market transformation category - recognises Sonae Sierraβs implementation of the 'Green Centre' concept in the development and management of its shopping centres.
Γlvaro Portela, Sonae Sierra's CEO, said: 'This award makes us very proud, since the environment is at the core of our strategy, both in the development and operation stages of our shopping and leisure centres.'
The award ceremony was attended by the European Energy Commissioner, Andris Piebalgs. This distinction was awarded after a selection process involving 251 candidates. Twenty five projects were then selected and evaluated according to a rigorous and pre-defined set of criteria, and subject to the scrutiny of a technical committee which finally selected the winners of the five categories.
Sonae Sierra, which owns 50 shopping centres in Europe and Brazil, has been focusing on sustainability in the development and operation of its shopping centres for 10 years now. Last October, the company won the Green Thinker Award organised by PropertyEU and Expo Real to distinguish the greenest thinker in the European real estate industry.
