Sonae Sierra presented three new projects on Wednesday that the international shopping centre specialist will develop in the Portuguese cities of Leiria, Maia and Caldas da Rainha. The three projects - Maia Jardim, Centro Bordalo and LeiriaShopping - are expected to create about 3,000 new jobs and will represent a total investment of EUR 212 mln, Sonae Sierra said in a statement. According to Γlvaro Portela, Sonae Sierra's CEO, the projects will allow the company to consolidate its leadership in the Portuguese market.

LeiriaShopping, Centro Bordalo and Maia Jardim are scheduled to open in 2010. The 43,000 m2 LeiriaShopping mall will be the result of the expansion of the current Continente de Leiria Shopping Centre, and will represent an investment of EUR 74 mln. Caldas da Rainha will have a gross lettable area of 24,000 m2 on 95 shops. Maia Jardim, owned by Sonae Distribuição and currently being developed by Sonae Sierra, will represent an investment of EUR 82 mln. This new project will reinforce the commercial offer of the region, where Sonae Sierra already owns and manages MaiaShopping. With an area of 31,000 m2, the new centre will make available a total of 100 shops and 1,400 parking spaces.
