RICS is launching three papers this autumn which highlight various aspects of sustainability in the built environment.
The standards organisation will publish an Insight Paper at Expo Real on Tuesday on sustainability and the construction sector entitled ‘Realising the Opportunities for Built Environment Professionals’.
Compiled by RICS’ Sustainability Task Force, it provides an overview of the EU policy framework and objectives relating to the energy performance of buildings and discusses some of the key issues and challenges at stake with regard to sustainable development in the construction sector.
In September, RICS presented a Guidance Note on how to integrate sustainability in existing buildings and improve their performance. The paper provides a road map for implementing sustainability measures in existing buildings and assists building surveyors in explaining the appropriate options available to clients.
It also highlights some of the key issues that are relevant when undertaking work to improve the sustainability of buildings. Last but not least, RICS will produce a guidance paper later this autumn with recommendations for professionals working in the commercial property valuation sector.
The strong focus is needed as sustainability requires a long-haul approach, says Joël Scherrenberg MRICS, chairman of the RICS Europe Sustainability Task Force. ‘The latest financial and economic crisis has shown that short-term thinking and decision-making do not ensure sustainable and stable property markets. Focusing on sustainability by definition requires more responsible and long-term thinking. As the built environment has the greatest potential impact on sustainability through the way we design, construct and operate our buildings, the role of property professionals is becoming ever more important and strategic.’
