Jones Lang LaSalle has emerged as the top real estate broker in Europe based on investment transaction volume in 2011, according to PropertyEU's annual ranking for 2012. JLL leaped far ahead of its nearest competitor CBRE with total deal volume of EUR 23.1 bn.

JLL's total was more than 50% higher than its own result last year and more than 40% higher than the EUR 13.6 bn booked by CBRE.

CBRE also slipped year-on-year. In 2010, CBRE reported volumes of EUR 16.4 bn, up 17% on last year's result. All other players booked an increase or stabilisation, with Cushman & Wakefield edging up higher in the top three.

Another big riser was BNP Paribas Real Estate which saw its result rise more than 50%, propelling it into the top five from 8th position last year. The Paris-based firm, which has a strong presence in France and Germany, is one of the two Continental players in the predominantly Anglo-Saxon league of top 10 brokers in Europe.

Stockholm-based Catella Property Group saw its result steady at EUR 6.1 bn, down marginally on last year’s result but still sufficient to maintain its position at number 6. DTZ appears to have definitively fallen out of the top five after falling to ninth place in 2011, but edged up one notch this year to number 8.
