The International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC) has announced the 2011 European Shopping Centre Awards finalists. In all, 18 centres made it to the short list of finalists, representing eight countries across Europe.
Awards Jury Chair, Biljana Pehrsson, Deputy CEO & Head of Real Estate at East Capital Private Equity, said: 'We are very pleased with the number and quality of entries this year. Despite a poor market we received 29 entries from 17 countries, including for the first time Bosnia and Herzegovina, Russia, Croatia and Estonia.
'It is a pleasure to see good architecture, concept and tenant mix and a lot of focus on the customer. All these projects were started before the economic meltdown and their leasing was carried out during the worst of the recession. All the entrants highlighted the difficulties of leasing in such a difficult climate but their leasing teams should be congratulated. They have done a very good job, negotiating hard for the good tenants that make their centres stand out.'
The jury has also seen an increased number of refurbished and expanded centres. As a result they have split this category into two for 2011 in order to assess small and larger centres with their peers.
'This is a category that will only get bigger over the coming years,'added Biljana.
Every year, ICSC Europe presents awards to the best new and refurbished or extended retail developments in Europe. Acknowledged to be the most prestigious awards within the Industry, the 2011 Awards will be presented at the 36th ICSC Europe Conference in Paris on on June 15-17 2011. The ICSC Awards give developers, architects and shopping centre management the opportunity to showcase their work to both a European and a global audience.
The Awards Jury consists of senior international figures within the shopping centre industry and any retail or entertainment project opened or newly refurbished or extended between 1 July 2008 and 30 June 2010 was eligible to apply for an award. Award Winners will be automatically submitted to the Global Design and Development 'Best of the Best' VIVA Awards to be announced at RECon 2012 in Las Vegas
