Chelsea Football Club has teamed up with property developer Almacantar to submit a bid for the acquisition of the 39-acre Battersea Power Station site in London.
The club has unveiled plans for a 60,000-seater stadium on the site, including a 15,000-all seated one-tier stand behind the south goal, likely to be the biggest one-tier stand in football. As well as a new home for the club, the development would include a town centre with substantial street-level retail shops, affordable housing and offices.
Chelsea is not the only interested party and there is no certainty that the bid will be successful. 'I think the level of interest shown by the first stage bids for Battersea Power Station is testament to the international significance of the Vauxhall Nine Elms site overall and reflects the positive momentum we are experiencing on the ground on an almost daily basis for this unique regeneration project,' Helen Fisher, Nine Elms programme director, commented on the first round bids for Battersea Power Station.
Chelsea FC is committed to preserve all the significant aspects of Battersea Power Station, with the four iconic chimneys and wash towers along with the Grade II listed west turbine hall and control room planned to be restored and retained in their original locations.
Chelsea FC also said it would make a 'significant' contribution towards the Northern Line Extension, a new high-volume transport link proposed for the area.
